From Planning to the Front Lines: Mission Confidence in Every RF Environment

In today’s contested spectrum, every signal counts — and every miscalculation can compromise the mission. That’s why HII delivers radio frequency (RF) modeling tools built for both precision and agility, supporting warfighters from strategic planning to real-time decision-making at the tactical edge.

As operational environments grow more congested, the ability to plan, model, and adapt (RF) networks is critical to mission success. HII’s spectrum modeling solutions — HII TIREM and VIPER® — offer a mission-aligned toolkit for both long-range planning and dynamic battlefield operations.

HII TIREM: Trusted, Maintained, and Mission-Ready

For decades, HII TIREM has been the Department of Defense’s gold standard for validated, physics-based RF propagation modeling. While the government-off-the-shelf (GOTS) version laid the foundation, it reflects an era of lower-resolution terrain and static modeling. The commercial HII TIREM builds on that legacy — actively maintained and mission-optimized for today’s operational demands.

The current commercial version integrates high-resolution terrain data (sub-meter), clutter models, and modern toolsets like Python and MATLAB to enable automated workflows. It accounts for complex variables such as knife-edge and wedge diffraction, troposcatter, urban shadowing, and atmospheric conditions like fog and rain — delivering more accurate results for RF coverage, interference analysis, and electronic warfare planning.

HII TIREM supports:

  • Integration with high-fidelity terrain for dynamic pre-mission modeling.
  • Spectrum analysis and planning for both pre-mission and long-range operations.
  • Electronic warfare planning, including support and electronic attack.
  • Satellite link planning between ground stations and orbiting assets.

VIPER®: Engineered for Tactical Advantage

While HII TIREM excels in strategic planning, VIPER® delivers battlefield simulation with unmatched fidelity — empowering real-time decisions in high-density, dynamic environments.

Designed to represent physical environments with precision, VIPER® models bridges, powerlines, buildings, and terrain at high resolution. It enables near-instant assessments of spectrum performance, command-and-control (C2) survivability, and adversary detection risk.

VIPER® provides:

  • Open standard data input and export for wide-scale portability, including into systems like Unreal.
  • Command post survivability and signature analysis.
  • Dynamic spectrum planning and adjustment.
  • RF signature management and detection modeling for maneuver units.
  • Feasibility studies to assess wireless system compatibility within shared frequency bands.

Use case: VIPER® helps commanders assess their RF footprint from an adversary’s perspective — enabling real-time adjustments to reduce exposure or mask signatures when spectrum monitoring systems are nearby.

Mission Confidence, From Strategy to Execution

HII TIREM and VIPER® are complementary tools supporting the full RF mission lifecycle. Whether modeling complex electromagnetic operational environments (EMOEs) with thousands of emitters or safeguarding command posts in live C2 environments, HII delivers spectrum engineering solutions tailored to operational reality.

With more than 65 years of leadership in RF propagation and electromagnetic modeling, HII empowers spectrum dominance — so warfighters can operate with confidence, clarity, and control.
