NEWPORT NEWS, Va., March 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that its Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3) subsidiary is sponsoring the 2015 National Environmental Justice (NEJ) Conference and Training Program. The conference will take place March 11-13 at The Howard University School of Law and The Washington Marriott at Metro Center in Washington, D.C.
Environmental justice is a commitment to not discriminate against individuals or communities in regard to environmental laws, regulations and policies. Combining socioeconomic factors with environmental protection, environmental justice aims to ensure non-discriminatory treatment of all communities, particularly low-income and minority populations, in regard to negative impacts to the environment.
The NEJ conference will feature guest speakers, technical assistance workshops, training sessions and a new Youth/Emerging Leaders Summit dedicated to discussing issues and new initiatives related to environmental justice. As a sponsor, SN3 will exhibit and have representatives available to discuss SN3's capabilities and commitment to environmental justice. Human resources representatives will also be present for company recruitment.
"Our sponsorship of the National Environmental Justice Conference is an important aspect of our holistic approach to environmental stewardship and corporate citizenship," said SN3 President Nick Lombardo. "Our commitment to environmental justice provides us the opportunity to learn about the communities we are working in and help to give them a voice about potential impacts to their surroundings. By working with the NEJ conference and its partners, we hope to spread greater awareness of environmental justice."
SN3's commitment to environmental justice stems from the company's code of ethics and permeates all aspects of its work as a Department of Energy contractor.
